'Papa Doc' was the embodiment of evil in the most sinister form. There was voodoo and his own involvement in strange rites, his apparent supernatural powers and reputed immortality.
After the July 1958 Haitian coup d'état attempt against President François Duvalier , he purged the army and law enforcement agencies in Haiti and executed numerous officers as he perceived them as a threat to his regime. When Papa Doc finally left this earthly plane on 21 April 1971, to be replaced by his son Jean-Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier (who held office for a further decade with the aid of the Tontons Macoutes), that familiar montage reappeared on the streets of Port-au-Prince and this time the elder Duvalier took Christ’s place, his hand on the new president’s shoulder. François Duvalier was the president of Haiti from 1957 until his death.
